The 1884-CC is among the most obtainable Carson City double eagle. It is still found in the higher AU grades but not many of these coins are CAC-quality with nice color and choice surfaces. In Uncirculated, this date has become quite expensive.
This frosty slider shows no real wear but there is just enough light friction on the high spots to rightfully call it an AU58. The strike is sharp, the surfaces are lightly marked and there is a good amount of luster seen on both sides. There are two small parallel marks on Liberty’s cheek and a light scratch just past star five on the obverse.
The last AU58 example of this date to sell at auction was ex Heritage 4/14: 6934 and it brought $8,519. It was not approved by CAC.
This is a truly nice 1884-CC double eagle and it would be a perfect coin for the collector who wants a single choice, well-made example of this design for a type set.
CAC has approved 29 in this grade with 22 finer.
