The 1884-CC is one of the more common Carson City double eagles from this decade. It is popular with type collectors due to its being one of the best produced CC double eagles in terms of strike. Properly graded AU58 examples are becoming harder to locate and a decent quality Mint State piece will now cost you $12,500+.
This frosty slider shows pleasing light to medium green-gold color and it is very well detailed on both sides. There are no severe abrasions in the fields and the reverse has the appearance of a fully Mint State coin. A small mint-made grease stain on the obverse can be seen above the left side of the first 8 in the date and onto the truncation.
An NGC AU58 example, which was more choice than the current piece, sold for $6,463 as Heritage 4/13: 6037.
The market for CC Twenties continues to roll along as evidenced by the recent Heritage FUN auction where my seemingly strong bids were, for the most part, blown out of the water.
