The 1884-CC is one of the more available double eagles from this mint but choice, properly graded AU58 examples have become hard to locate. In Uncirculated, the 1884-CC is now out of reach for most collectors, so AU55 to AU58 tends to be a “sweet spot” for the date.
This Gem Slider has the look of an MS62 but there is a slight amount of friction visible on the obverse high spots. The color is a light golden-yellow on the obverse; the reverse has a bit of rose shading especially at the center. There are only a few small ticks in the fields and a faint mint-made grease stain from the date to the rim at 4:30.
The last AU58 example of this date to sell at auction was a PCGS coin in the 11/13 Teletrade sale that sold cheaply at $5,288.
Unless you have an extra $12,000-13,000+ lying around for an MS61, this slider 1884-CC is about as nice as you will find.
