The 1884-CC is one of the more common CC double eagles and this makes it very popular with type collectors. It tends to be found in EF45 to AU55 grades and is typically heavily abraded with processed surfaces.
This medium green-gold example has the luster and body of an AU55 but it has a few marks on the obverse, notably on the cheek of Liberty and along with nose. The reverse is choice and the overall look of the coin is excellent both for the date and grade.
Two NGC AU53s sold at auction in the early part of 2013 each brought $3,525. I have wholesaled inferior AU53 examples of this date recently in the $3,750-4,000 range.
