The 1884-CC is one of the more common double eagles from this mint which makes it aptly suited for type purposes. It is seen most often in EF45 to AU55 grades but it is becoming harder to locate in choice, original AU.
This pleasing coin is nice for the grade with natural color and no especially obtrusive marks. With just a bit more luster present, I could see it having graded AU53 to AU55 based on its sharp overall detail.
The last AU50 example of this date to sell at auction was a PCGS coin which brought $3,525 as Heritage 10/12: 6257.
CAC has approved four in this grade with 83 finer.
