This numismatically significant issue is the first Type Three double eagle from Philadelphia. It is common in MS60 and MS61 but scarce in properly graded MS62 and rare in MS63. An MS63 with CAC would likely fetch in excess of $15,000.

This choice, original coin has excellent color with rose centers changing to orange-gold and green towards the borders. It is undipped and lightly abraded with a few scrapes and ticks in the left field keeping it at the 62 level. It is one of the nicer 1877-P double eagles that I have handled in the last few years.

The last CAC approved NGC MS62 example to sell at auction was Heritage 10/12: 6236 which brought $4,113. A non-CAC MS62 graded by PCGS sold for $4,406 in the Heritage 4/13 auction.

A savvy purchase for the Type Three collector given the high price of MS63′s.

CAC has approved nine in this grade with just one finer (MS63).
