THE ONLY 1877-CC DOUBLE EAGLE GRADED AU55+ BY PCGS
This is a numismatically significant issue as it is the first Type Three double eagle to be made at the Carson City mint. The 1877-CC is scarce in the higher AU grades and it is rare and very expensive in Uncirculated. For most collectors, AU55 represents the best value grade.
This coin is fresh to the market, having been recently found in Europe. It shows natural light rose and green-gold hues with a good deal of luster remaining on both sides. A few small marks in the right obverse field are likely what kept PCGS from grading this coin a full AU58 and adding a considerable amount of value.
Heritage 3/15: 3266, an NGC AU55, sold for $9,400 while the last PCGS AU55 1877-CC double eagle to sell at auction brought $8,813 as Heritage 1/15: 7528. The most recent APR for a PCGS AU58 example is $25,850 which was recorded in April 2014.
This seems like exceptional value to me as an AU58, if available, would be fully double the price of this AU55+.
