With few exceptions, Type Two double eagles are scarce in MS61 and very scarce above this. The 1876 is among the more common issues of this design, making it ideal for an affordable type set.
This is an extremely choice coin for the grade with a nice fresh appearance and rich rose and yellow-gold hues. The luster is fresh and is interrupted only by a few marks in the left obverse field.
There are no recent APR’s for CAC-approved 1876 double eagles in PCGS MS61; non-CAC pieces typically bring in the $2,250-2,500 range.
This is the best available quality for this type at under $3,000.
CAC has approved 26 in this grade with 21 finer.
