The 1876-CC is numismatically significant as the final Type Two double eagle produced at the Carson City mint. It is fairly common in grades below AU55 but it is not easy to find in AU58 and it is scarce in Uncirculated.

Many 1876-CC double eagles have frosty luster and this example is unusual in that it has a nearly fully prooflike obverse; the reverse is semi-prooflike but with a bit more frost. I’m not certain if NGC would designate this coin as “Prooflike” if it were resubmitted but I believe it is in an old enough older that when it was initially graded this designation was not applied to gold coins.

The lightly worn yellow gold surfaces are a bit scuffy and these abrasions are accentuated by the depth of the mirror surfaces. However, this is a coin with excellent eye appeal and real character.

The last AU58 example of this date to trade at auction was a PCGS/CAC coin which brought $8,225 in Heritage’s 3/13 sale. A non-CAC NGC AU58 sold for $6,463 in Heritage’s 8/12 auction.

With Uncirculated examples of the 1876-CC now bringing in the five figures, a nice AU58 like this represents good value for the CC double eagle collector.
