CONDITIONALLY RARE 1873-S $20, GRADED MS62 BY PCGS
Varieties of 1873-S double eagle are known with an Open 3 and a Closed 3. The Closed 3 is the more available of the two I terms of overall rarity but, as with its Open 3 counterpart, it is very scarce in properly graded MS62 and essentially unavailable any finer.
This fresh to the market example is the best 1873-S Closed 3 $20 I have owned in some time and it is unusually clean and choice. The color is a pleasing delicate pale rose and orange-gold while both sides show far fewer abrasions than is typical for this often-baggy date. The central obverse is not fully struck as usual while the reverse is boldly detailed.
The last MS62 example of this date to sell at auction brought $8,238 as Heritage 11/14: 4099; it was slabbed by NGC.
If available, a PCGS MS63 would cost in excess of $30,000 and currently only three have been graded as such with none finer.
