Housed in an old Green Label holder. By today’s standards, I grade this coin a solid EF45.

The 1873-CC is less rare than the 1871-CC but it compares very favorably to the 1872-CC in terms f overall rarity. The 1873-CC is most often seen in the EF40 to AU50 range and it is seldom found with natural color and choice surfaces.

It is likely that this example is one of the CC double eagles that were found in a giant-sized overseas hoard in the late 1980′s/early 1990′s. As with many of the 1873-CC twenties in this group, this coin shows a distinctive “Euro” appearance with deep orange-gold surfaces contrasted by darker highlights. There is a good deal of underlying luster and fewer than usual noticeable bagmarks.

Heritage 2/14: 4275, graded EF40 by PCGS and housed in a similar old PCGS holder (and clearly from the same group as the present example) brought $11,750. That coin and the one offered here are the only two CAC approved EF40 1873-CC double eagles.

Here is a scarce coin with all the “bells and whistles” a collector could possibly ask for!

CAC has approved two in this grade with 21 finer.
