Old Green Holder. By today’s standards I grade this coin a solid AU53.
The 1872-S is one of the more available Type Two double eagles from the San Francisco mint. It doesn’t become hard to locate until the Uncirculated grades.
This frosty, lustrous example shows good detail. The obverse is a bit scuffy as is common for the date; the reverse is cleaner and more choice.
Its combination of old green PCGS holder, gold sticker and nice eye appeal make this a Type Two double eagle with all the “bells and whistles!”
This is the only 1872-S double eagle which has been awarded a gold sticker by CAC. Only 12 coins for the entire type have been gold stickered.
