SOLD- $20.00 – 1869 PCGS MS61 CAC

The 1869 is in the second tier of rarity in the Type Two Philadelphia series. It is less rare than the 1868 but it compares favorably to the 1870 and the 1871. It is a very scarce issue in Uncirculated which is nearly never seen above MS61 to MS62.
This very lustrous example shows nice natural rose and orange-gold color on both sides. The obverse has some scattered scuffs which limit the grade; the reverse grades at least a point higher. The detail is excellent as is the visual appeal. I have only handled one finer 1869 double eagle in the last few years; a PCGS MS63 which is sold to a specialist dealer in late 2013.
Heritage 9/13: 6871, graded MS61 by PCGS, sold for $14,275 while Heritage 6/13: 4839, also in a PCGS MS61 holder, brought $15,275. Neither was approved by PCGS.
If you collect Type Two double eagles, you will recognize the importance of this offering.
CAC has approved one coin in this grade with two finer.
