All of the Philadelphia double eagles from 1868 to 1871 are scarce and while the 1869 is probably the most available in terms of overall rarity, it is not often seen in grades higher than AU55. Given the fact that a decent Mint State example is currently valued at $15,000-17,500, many collectors of Type Two double eagles are looking for a nice AU58.
This coin shows very little–if any–actual wear. It does have some scattered abrasions on the obverse and, to a lesser extent, on the reverse. The luster is close to full on both sides and, unlike nearly every known 1869-P double eagle, this piece hasn’t been brightened from a dipping.
The last APR for an AU58 example is Stacks Bowers 4/13: 1391. Graded by NGC and not approved by CAC, it still brought $5,288. There have been just five appearances since October 2008 with only one graded by PCGS. No AU58 with CAC has ever sold at auction.
I have only handled one Uncirculated 1869 double eagle in the last five+ years and this is the first CAC/PCGS AU58 I have offered.
CAC has approved four in this grade with one finer (MS63).
