The 1869 is one of four scarce, overlooked P mint Type Two double eagles. Along with the 1868, 1870 and 1871, it is scarce in properly graded AU and rare in Uncirculated. For most collectors, a nice AU53 to AU55 example will prove suitable.
This very choice example is totally original with a pleasing “Euro” appearance. The obverse and reverse have taken on a deep russet color with darker highlights and this covers lustrous, lightly abraded fields. This is among the few circulated 1869-P double eagles I have seen which is original and unquestionably undipped.
Only one AU53 has sold as auction since 2008 and it brought $3,525 as Heritage 8/14: 4131. It was graded AU53 by NGC and was approved by CAC but it was not as crusty as the current coin.
Good value and a very pleasing coin for the date and grade.
CAC has approved two in this grade with 10 finer.
