Until the discovery of 271 Uncirculated examples on the S.S. Republic, the 1865 double eagle was regarded as a condition rarity which was almost never seen above AU55. Non-shipwreck coins in this grade range are still not easy to locate, especially those with natural color and choice surfaces.
This choice, lustrous example shows beautiful deep, even green-gold color with an overlay of natural orange. It doesn’t have the “Euro” look seen on this date without darkness on the relief details and the fields are extremely clean and choice without the usual deep, detracting abrasions.
An NGC AU55 with CAC approval sold for $4,113 at Heritage 2/14: 5521.
This is a great 1865 double eagle for the Type One collector who would prefer a choice, non-shipwreck coin.
CAC has approved four in this grade with 45 finer.
