This popular Civil War double eagle is common in EF grades and only moderately scarce in the lower to medium AU range. However, most of the coins which grade AU50 to AU55 are either bright from having been dipped or excessively abraded from heavy commercial use.
This pleasing example has nice original orange-gold color atop choice, clean surfaces. The strike, as is typical for the date, shows some weakness on the hair but the overall detail is sharper than usual.
The last AU53 example of this date to sell at auction was a non-CAC coin graded by NGC which brought $2,990 as Heritage 3/12: 4243.
A scarce date with this degree of eye appeal.
CAC has approved this one coin in AU53 with 19 finer.
