The 1863-S is comparable in rarity to the other Civil War issues double eagles from this mint in the upper circulated grades; it is a bit more available in higher grades due to the existence of hoards/shipwrecks.
This piece was recently sourced from Europe and it shows deep even green-gold color with some tinges of rose-hued mint luster in the recessed areas. Both sides are lightly marked and show dirt.
A nice looking coin and a great piece for the collecgtor who is either just beginning a Civil War gold collection or who is working on an affordable Type One grouping.
