The 1863 is the second rarest Civil War double eagle from the Philadelphia mint after the 1862. It is scarce in all grades and rare in the lower AU grades. The present example is one of the nicer 1863 double eagles I have handled and the first since the lovely PCGS/CAC AU58 I sold last month.
This minimally abraded 1863 is very lustrous with medium rose and orange-gold color; some darker toning rests on the relief details. The detail is excellent and if the left obverse field were just a tad less scuffy, I believe this piece would have received strong consideration at the 55 level.
An AU53 example has not sold at auction since 2010; an eternity in a popular series such as Type One double eagles.
Uncirculated examples of this date are essentially unavailable while Choice AU’s have become very expensive. This nice mid-range AU may represent the best value for many Type One collectors and it is a lovely, fresh coin to boot.
On hold.
