In my opinion, the 1861-S is the scarcest of the five Civil War double eagles from the San Francisco mint. It is seen far less often than the other four dates in the higher circulated grades and it becomes genuinely scarce in Uncirculated.
This choice, original example is very close to—if not fully—an AU58 by today’s standards. It shows beautiful rich natural orange-gold color with some contrast darker hues on the highlights. A semi-circular scrape bellows stars three through six on the obverse is the only negative aspect and the reverse is clean and choice.
The last auction record for this date in AU55 was for a non-CAC NGC coin which brought $4,994 as Heritage 8/13: 5200. A vastly inferior NGC/CAC AU55 sold for $4,025 in Heritage’s 4/12 auction.
An excellent coin for the Type One date collector or for the Civil War specialist.
CAC has approved three in this grade with 12 finer.
