The 1861 is, by a large margin, the most available Civil War double eagle. It is still available in the higher AU grades but it is not often found with completely natural color and choice surfaces.
This gem slider has the appearance of an MS61 to MS62. It shows just a hint of cabinet friction on the high spots but no serious marks or luster breaks. The color is a pleasing blend of rose and green-gold while the surfaces show a pleasing frosty texture.
Numerous non-CAC PCGS examples of this date in AU58 have sold at auction in 2014 in the $3,900-4,300 range. In the 1/14 DLRC internet auction, a PCGS AU58 with CAC approval realized $4.600.
CAC has approved 51 in this grade with 45 finer.
