This popular Civil War date is among the more common Type One double eagles even though its rarity profile has not been altered by large numbers of new coins found in shipwrecks or hoards. It is common in AU58 although not as easy to locate as in the past with choice surfaces and natural color.
This attractive slider shows the slightest trace of wear on the high spots but it has nearly full luster and very clean surfaces. Both the obverse and reverse show nice even green-gold and orange hues which darken slightly at the reverse border. A small scuff in the right obverse field serves as identification.
A CAC approved NGC AU58 1861 double eagle sold cheaply for $3,525 as Heritage 11/14: 3367. Another CAC approved NGC AU58 brought $4,113 as Heritage 12/13: 5220.
