The 1861 is far and away the most available Civil War era double eagle and before the discovery of thousands of high grade 1857-S double eagles in the SS Central America treasure, it was the most common Type One.
This lightly worn “slider” has nearly full luster and just a few light ticks in the fields. There is some deeper color noted on the relief areas of the obverse.
The last NGC/CAC AU58 to sell at auction brought $4,113 as Heritage 12/13: 5220.
CAC has approved 49 in this grade with 41 finer.
