The 1860-S is one of the few San Francisco double eagles whose rarity profile was not totally distorted by shipwrecks. It tends to come weakly struck, although not as much so as the 1859-S, and it is hard to find in the higher AU grades with natural color and surfaces.
This high end, original example shows very little actual wear and has toned in a pleasing, even medium orange-gold hue. There is a good deal of luster seen on both sides and just minor scuffing and handling marks. The strike shows some typical weakness at the centers and the rims but the overall quality is far above average for the date and grade.
No CAC approved AU55s from either service have sold at auction. Only two PCGS AU55′s have sold at auction since May 2012 and the last brought $4,406 as HA 9/13: 6857.
CAC has approved seven in this grade with 14 finer.
