The 1860-S is a slightly scarcer date in the Type One double eagle series. It is rarer than other San Francisco dates of this era as its high grade population was not adversely affected by shipwrecks. In properly graded AU55, this is a scarce, underappreciated date.

Nice rose and orange-gold coloration, on both the obverse and the reverse, gives this coin very good eye appeal. It is lightly marked and lustrous with a mint-made copper spot seen right below the 60 in the date and a small grease stain, as made, just to the outside of star eight.

Heritage 6/12: 5235, graded AU55 by PCGS and approved by CAC, realized $4,888. No other PCGS/CAC AU55 examples of this date have sold at auction since then.

Uncirculated 1860-S double eagles are priced out of reach for many collectors, so this choice, appealing AU55 should be of interest to the sophisticated specialist.

CAC has approved seven in this grade with 14 finer.
