The 1860 is many times scarcer than the 1861 yet it sells for a comparable amount in this grade due to the fact that it does not have the Civil War cachet which the latter issue boasts. The 1860 is only moderately scarce in properly graded AU58 but it has become difficult to find one with natural color and choice surfaces.
This lovely slider example has likely never been cleaned or dipped and it displays nearly full luster under a blanket of natural orange-gold color. While there are some darker highlights seen, this is not a dull, overly dark Euro coin and the surfaces show only moderate scuffing. The overall eye appeal is excellent.
An NGC AU58 with CAC approval sold for $4,994 as Heritage 7/14: 4001 while the last PCGS AU58 with CAC approval to sell at auction brought $4,113 as Heritage 1/14: 7066.
