This is one of the few SF mint Type One double eagles whose rarity profile was not affected by shipwrecks. As a result, nice 1859-S double eagles are hard to locate and properly graded AU55s are about as nice as one can typically find.
This untoned, lustrous example has a vibrancy which is not often seen on this date as most are found dull and lackluster. It is lightly worn and has pleasing light yellow-gold color with premium overall eye appeal for the grade.
Heritage 2/14: 5411, graded AU55 by NGC and approved by CAC, sold for $4,112 while another NGC AU55 with CAC approval brought $4,553 as Heritage 6/13: 5868.
A really nice looking example of this popular Type One issue.
CAC has approved 13 in this grade with 15 finer.
