While a substantial number of 1856-S double eagles were found in the SS Central America treasure, the number pales in comparison to the 1857-S. Collectors are anxious to acquire nice 1856-S SSCA double eagles to go with their 1857-S pieces.
This very choice AU example shows nice natural golden color with nearly full luster and just a touch of rub on the high spots. BY today’s standards, I would grade this coin a strong AU58.
Two PCGS/CAC AU58 gold foil 1856-S double eagles sold at auction in 2014 for $7,050; these were HA 2/14: 4251 and Stacks Bowers 6/14: 2612.

For the date, CAC has approved 10 in AU55 with 20 finer.
