PCGS MS62 SSCA 1856-S DOUBLE EAGLE

1,108 double eagles dated 1856-S were pulled from the ocean floor by the SSCA salvagers. This issue is seen most often in the AU55 to MS63 range and higher grade pieces are seen far less often than the 1857-S double eagles.

The present example is very choice for the assigned grade and it would rate higher (by at least a full point) were it not for some minor scuffs on the obverse. The reverse, by itself, is of Gem quality and shows great luster and dynamic rose and pale yellow-gold color.

This specific die variety is slightly scarcer with a population of eight in this grade and just two finer.

Heritage 1/15: 7404, also graded MS62 and approved by CAC, realized $14,100. A non-CAC MS62 example realized $18,800 as Heritage 4/15: 5429.

This coin has been off the market since 2000 and it is housed in the original gold foil label PCGS slab. It does not include any of the original packaging

The additional information below is based on a non-SSCA 56-S $20. The actual PCGS number for this variety is 70026, and the PCGS population is 8/2.
