OGH. By today’s standards this coin, in my opinion, is a solid AU55 if not an AU58.
This was formerly a scarcer date but the discovery of the S.S. Central America has made the 1856-S more available than in the past. It is still much harder to find than the ubiquitous 1857-S and it is a historically significant issue which saw circulation in Gold Rush era San Francisco.
This piece is exceptional for the issue with very clean satiny surfaces which have never been lightened or improved. A few small marks on the portrait do not detract. The reverse of the slab has some scratches which are not located on the coin itself.
A coin which should see considerable interest, both from date collectors of Type One double eagles and those who specialize in neat, older slabs.
This is the only 1856-S double eagle in any grade which has been awarded a gold sticker by CAC.
