The 1856 double eagle is a scarce, undervalued date which is less available than the 1857 or 1858 and comparable to the 1855. It is not often seen above the EF45 to AU53 range and not often with natural color and surfaces.

This is a literally perfect coin for the grade with deep, even orange and green-gold color. There are scattered marks in the fields with a few noticeable to the naked eye but it is doubtful if more than a handful of EF45 1856 double eagles exist which show this degree of originality.

The only other EF45 example with CAC approval, which was similar in quality to the present example, sold for $2,359 as Heritage 7/12: 5078.

I have been a champion of this date for many years and I remain a fan of the 1856 double eagle in any grade.

CAC has approved two in this grade with 17 finer.
