The 1855-S is the second double eagle produced at the San Francisco mint. It is not often seen above AU55.
This lustrous example shows a slightly weak strike which is typical for the date. The light green-gold surfaces show a moderate number of abrasions while there is so toning in the obverse fields.
There are six APR’s for NGC AU55′s since 8/11 and none are for CAC approved coins. They range from a low of $3,290 to a high of $3,819.
This date is hard to find choicer and AU58′s become expensive.
CAC has approved four in this grade with 14 finer.
