The 1855 is one of my favorite Type One double eagles. It is very scarce in the medium to higher AU grades but its rarity takes on a new perspective in Uncirculated. It is likely that as few as 15 exist in properly graded Uncirculated with most in the MS60 to MS61. The finest known is a superb PCGS MS64 which sold for $126,500 to a prominent Midwestern collector in March 2006.
This beautiful example has a freshness and vibrancy not often seen on this date. Both sides are extremely frosty and show attractive natural light golden-orange color. I could easily see this coin in an MS62 holder and it has exceptional overall eye appeal for the date and grade.
There has been only one PCGS MS61 (this coin) which has sold at auction since 2006.
It is likely that years will pass before a comparable–or finer–1855 double eagle is made available and this is a very important opportunity for the advanced Type One collector.
CAC has approved one coin in this grade with one finer (MS64).
Ex Heritage 3/12: 4202, where is sold for $16,100.
