While generally lumped in with the 1851 and the 1852, the 1853 is a scarcer date and it is actually hard to locate in properly graded AU55. It becomes very scarce and pricey in the lower Uncirculated grades, making it popular in the higher collector range.
This lustrous, lightly worn example would likely grade AU58 were it not for just a few too many small scuffs in the obverse fields. It shows nice light rose and orange-gold color and is well detailed, even for this well-made issue.
A PCGS AU55 with CAC approval sold for $4,115 as Heritage 4/14: 6751 while another brought $4,113 as Heritage 3/14: 10694.
At less than $4,000, this coin represents an excellent opportunity for the Type One newbie to dip his toe into the water.
CAC has approved 13 in this grade with 24 finer.
