At one time, the 1853-O double eagle was lumped along with the 1851-O and 1852-O but today we know that it is far scarcer than either of those two. It is not often seen above the EF45 to AU53 range and prices jump dramatically for this issue in higher grades.
This pleasing example shows light to medium green-gold color with flashes of reddish-gold in the protected areas. There is a bit of luster on both sides and the detail is excellent. A shallow natural planchet flake can be seen at the inside of star seven on the obverse.
The last APR for an EF45 is $6,900 for a PCGS/CAC example sold by Heritage in their 4/11 auction. Since the beginning of 2009, only six EF45′s in total have been sold at auction.
A solid coin for the grade and the best available quality for less than $10,000.
