The 1851 is among the more available non-shipwreck Type One double eagles which makes it popular with type collectors. It is common in the lower to mid AU grades but few are seen with totally original surfaces and deep, crusty coloration.
This is an extremely choice coin for the grade with a dark “Euro” appearance which features orange-gold fields contrasted by darker color on the relief areas. There are no excessive abrasions and a good deal of frosty luster remains.
No PCGS/CAC AU53 example of this date has sold at auction. A PCGS AU53 in an older holder recently realized $3,173 as Heritage 2/15: 4306.
Good value at current market levels and a nice Type One type coin for the collector with a limited budget but good taste.
CAC has approved three in this grade with 35 higher.
