The 1851 is one of the more available Philadelphia Type One double eagles but I see it in the higher AU grades less frequently than I do the 1851. It is an ideal date for type purposes due to the fact that it tends to be among the best made issues of this design.
This is a very choice “slider” example with extremely clean surfaces. Both sides show natural golden -orange hues with some medium reddish-gold outlining the devices on the reverse. The luster is frosty and this piece appears to have never been cleaned or processed as it has the right texture for the issue
There have been no recent auction records for an AU58 example with CAC approval. A nice NGC AU58 without CAC approval sold for $4,600 as Heritage 7/12: 5068.
An excellent Type One type coin for the collector who is just discovering the fun and challenge of this series.
CAC has approved nine in this grade with 10 finer.
