The 1851 is among the more available early date Type One double eagles. That said, locating a truly choice AU55 to AU58 with original color and surfaces is no easy task.
This well detailed example shows nice natural rose and light orange-gold color atop lightly abraded surfaces. Both sides retain a decent amount of mint luster and the eye appeal is clearly above average for the date and grade.
Six APR’s were recorded for AU55 1851 double eagles in 2014 but not a single one of these were for a CAC-approved coin. In fact, I can find no recent auctions for any 1851 $20 in this grade with a CAC sticker. Nice quality non-CAC 1851 double eagles in AU55 trade in the $3,000-3,250 range.
To my way of thinking, this is a perfect collector grade example of this popular early date and it would be difficult to find a nicer piece in this price range.
CAC has approved 11 in this grade with 22 finer.
