The 1850-O is numismatically significant as the first double eagle from the New Orleans mint. It is much scarcer than the 1851-O and 1852-O but not as scarce as the 1853-O. That said, it is not easy to locate in EF45 to AU53 with choice original surfaces and attractive natural color.

This light russet and reddish-gold example has far fewer abrasions than usual and this is significant as the 1850-O double eagle tends to come with extensive detracting abrasions. The central detail is sharp but there is some weakness, from die lapping, seen at the stars on the obverse. The overall eye appeal is still excellent for the grade.

Three non-CAC PCGS EF45 examples sold at auction in 2014 and they realized $7.050, $8,813 and $8,525, respectively. A CAC approved PCGS EF45 brought $9,400 as Heritage 4/13: 5964.

About Uncirculated examples of this date are scarce and pricey, so for many collectors, this pleasing EF45 will represent a practical addition to their Type One double eagle set.

CAC has approved nine in this grade with nine finer.
