SOLD – 25¢ – 1873 Open 3, No Arrows PCGS MS64+
UNDERVALUED 1873 OPEN 3 NO ARROWS QUARTER GRADED MS64+ BY PCGS
Despite a relatively high mintage of 172,000 pieces, the 1873 Open 3 is a scarce issue and one which is harder to locate in Uncirculated than the higher-valued 1873 With Arrows. Many were melted and this issue is legitimately scarce in MS64 and rare in MS65.
This is one of the more eye-appealing examples of this variety I have seen and most of the slabbed MS64’s are either dipped or unattractively toned. This piece is well struck and satiny with splendid multi-colored pastels color. There is a faint mint-made grease stain at the central obverse which is really all which separates this coin from the 65 level.
No PCGS MS64 or MS64+ 1873 Open 3 quarters have sold at auction since late 2003. The last NGC MS64 to sell brought $2,350 as Heritage 1/16: 3871. A PCGS MS65 which was deeply toned sold for $7,678 as Heritage 2/14: 3857.
This is one of only two graded MS64+ by PCGS with nine finer at PCGS.
