Only 5,700 business strike 1868 half eagles were made and this date is generally seen in the EF40 to AU50 range. It is very rare in full Mint State with only three or so known, the finest of which is a single MS62 graded by PCGS. The current example is likely the second finest known.
This appears to be an early die state as it is mostly prooflike with the obverse more so than the reverse. There are a number of ticks in the fields which are amplified by the reflectiveness and these are primarily clustered in the fields. The color is a medium orange-gold shade and there is some contrast between the frosted devices and the reflective fields.
The only auction appearance for a PCGS Mint State example of this date is for this exact coin; see below for the full citation.
If you collect high grade Liberty Head half eagles, you are almost certainly lacking the 1868 in Uncirculated. How many more chances will you have to acquire such a coin?
Ex Heritage 4/13: 4527, where it sold for $16,450.
