The 1867-S is the second With Motto half eagle struck at the San Francisco mint and despite a comparatively high mintage of 29,000 coins, it is actually comparable to a number of better-known and more highly valued SF half eagles from the 1850′s and 1860′s. It is unknown in Uncirculated and extremely rare in properly graded AU with less than ten known. It is typically seen well worn and almost never with natural color and good eye appeal.
This is the most pleasing collector grade 1867-S half eagle I can recall having seen. It shows attractive natural russet colors on the obverse and reverse with considerable detail for the grade and some hidden mint bloom in the protected areas. There are a few old scrapes on the surfaces and a reeding mark below the E in AMERICA. The eye appeal is exceptional for the date.
No PCGS EF45 examples of the 1867-S half eagle have been sold at auction going back to march, 2004; almost a decade ago!
This is the only 1867-S in any grade to have been approved by CAC and it is destined to reside in a savvy collectors set of Liberty Head half eagles.
CAC has approved just this one coin in all grades combined.
