VERY RARE 1863-S HALF EAGLE IN PCGS AU53

This curiously underappreciated issue is more rare than its original of 17,00 would suggest as many were minted and most saw long, active circulation in the Western economy. There are an estimated 60-70 known, mostly in the VF-EF range. About Uncirculated 1863-S half eagles are rare and this date appears to be unique in Uncirculated (PCGS MS61).

This fresh-to-the-market coin is truly a Gem for the grade with lovely rich natural medium orange-gold color and some contrasting dirt in the devices. A good deal of luster can be seen on both sides and the detail is above average for the issue. There is a small cluster of marks in the left obverse field which limits the grade but this piece is still nicer than many of the 1863-S half eagles I have seen in AU55 holders. This coin is a great combination of rarity and eye appeal.

No PCGS AU53 example has sold at auction since Heritage 1/04: 7007, which realized $12,075. An NGC AU55 brought $16,450 as Heritage 3/14: 30317 and it was not approved by CAC.

An important coin for the half eagle collector, the Civil War gold specialist or the San Francisco gold aficionado.

CAC has approved two in this grade with just one finer (AU55). A total of five have been approved in all grades.
