The 1860-S half eagle is clearly a very scarce issue with as few as 50-60 known but, curiously, I have handled more examples of this date in the past year than in what seems like the last three to five years combined. This issue is quite scarce in properly graded VF-EF and it is rare in AU.
This evenly worn piece is free of problems and it displays warm orange-gold color. It has enough detail to suggest a VF30 to VF35 grade and some of what appears to be wear on the feathers is actually weakness of strike.
The only PCGS VF25 to sell at auction in recent years is this coin which brought $1,208 as Heritage 12/09: 1659; it was not CAC approved at that time.
For less than $2,000 this is a truly great value.
CAC has approved this one coin in VF 25 with nine finer.
