The 1860-S half eagle is clearly a very scarce issue with as few as 50-60 known but, curiously, I have handled more examples of this date in the past year than in what seems like the last three to five years combined. This issue is quite scarce in properly graded EF and it is rare in AU.
This light yellow-gold example has some rose toning at the borders. Some luster remains and the surfaces are free of the deep marks typically seen on this date.
Only two PCGS EF45 1860-S half eagles have sold at auction since 2006. One sold for $3,173 as Heritage 6/13: 5724 and it had very funky color; the nicer of the two realized $3,819 as Stacks Bowers 5/13: 2474. Neither had CAC approval.
The No Motto San Francisco half eagles have become more and more and more popular in the last few years but they remain undervalued in comparison to the southern branch mint issues.
CAC has approved three in this grade with five finer.
