The 1860-C is numismatically significant as one of just two half eagles made at the Charlotte mint in the 1860′s. Of the 14,813 produced, there are probably fewer than 200 known with many in the VF-EF range/ Properly graded AU’s are very scarce and this issue is very hard to find with nice color and surfaces.
As with all known examples, this coin is graded only by the obverse as the reverse die was improperly prepared and appears very mushy to the naked eye. The detail on the obverse suggests a grade higher than AU50 as there is a good deal of luster and detail. Both sides have medium golden-orange color with deeper reddish hues at the obverse rim.
Only two AU50′s have sold at auction since 2004. An NGC AU50 with CAC approval sold for $3,525 as Heritage 1/13: 7217. An OGH PCGS AU50 brought a strong $4,600 as Heritage 8/11: 5345.
This is not an easy date to find in this grade, especially with this quality of appearance.
CAC has approved two in this grade with seven finer.
