PCGS Lookup Number 8281
Old “fatty” holder. By today’s standards this coin appears to grade at least AU53 if not AU55.
The 1859-C is a much scarcer issue than the 1857-C and 1858-C half eagles but not as hard to obtain as the 1860-C. It is generally seen in EF40 to AU50 grades and it becomes rare anywhere close to Mint State.
This choice piece is lustrous and shows appealing orange-gold color with flashes of red in the protected areas. As always, the obverse is far sharper than the reverse and this is the result of faulty die preparation which is seen on both the obverse and the reverse. An area of roughness below the O in OF is mint-made.
This piece is clearly finer than the NGC AU55 example which sold for $3,827 as Heritage 4/13: 5805.
A well above average example of this date.
CAC has approved just two in this grade with one finer.
