This overlooked date is actually many times scarcer than the common dates from this decade (1852-D, 1853-D and 1854-D) and I think it is scarcer than such better regarded issues as the 1858-D, 1859-D and 1860-D. It is actually one of the harder Dahlonega half eagles to find with original color and surfaces.
This is a pristine, totally original example with lovely rich green-gold accentuated by some subtle rose-gold hues. There is dirt in the protected areas on both sides and the surfaces are very clean with no appreciable marks. The strike is very acceptable for the issue with nearly full centers; the rims are, as on all examples, noticeably bevelled.
There has been just one slabbed AU50 example of the 1857-D half eagle sold at auction since 1997 (!), a PCGS coin offered as Heritage 10/12: 5901 which brought $3,290.
For just a few hundred dollars more than a common date, here is the chance to own a genuinely scarce Dahlonega half eagle and one with real character.
