The 1857-C is a common date in the Charlotte half eagle series but it is harder to find with nice color and choice surfaces than most collectors realize.
This orange-gold and reddish example has more luster than one might expect for the grade but it is, in my opinion, accurately designated by PCGS. It shows a typical flat strike with some weakness at the borders; there are a few scattered marks in the fields including a curving scratch at stars ten to twelve.
The last PCGS EF45 example to sell at auction was a non-CAC coin which brought $2,185. . A nice CAC approved NGC EF45 sold for $2,233 as Heritage 6/13: 5722.
CAC has approved three in this grade with 11 finer.
