The 1856-S is similar to the 1855-S in terms of overall and high grade rarity. Both are relatively plentiful in EF and lower AU grades but they become scarce in the higher AU grades and are very rare in Uncirculated. This date is almost never seen with natural color and original surfaces.
This choice, wholesome example shows very pleasing medium yellow-gold color with underlying rose. The strike is full, the surfaces lack any marks of note and the eye appeal is excellent for the date and grade.
A non-CAC NGC AU55 1856-S half eagle sold for $2,115 as Heritage 3/14: 30312.
This coin is half the price of an AU58 but probably nicer than 90% of the coins in 58 holders.
CAC has approved five in this grade with three finer.
